Cyclosporiasis Outbreak in Michigan: What You Need to Know (2026)

Michigan's cyclosporiasis outbreak is growing at an alarming rate, with over 1,500 cases reported since June 22, 2026. The outbreak is caused by the cyclospora parasite, which leads to severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as watery and explosive diarrhea. The incubation period can range from two days to two weeks after exposure, making it challenging to contain the spread. The outbreak has affected at least 44 people in Michigan, with the majority seeking treatment at urgent care centers and primary care doctors' offices. The sickest patients are being admitted to hospitals, presenting with abdominal pain, nausea, and dehydration. The outbreak's source remains unknown, and health officials are working to investigate the surge in cases. Cyclosporiasis outbreaks have previously been linked to contaminated bagged salad mixes, kits, and imported produce from tropical and subtropical regions. To prevent infection, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommends cooking leafy greens and herbs, thoroughly washing fresh produce, and avoiding prewashed bagged lettuce or salad mixes. However, washing fruits and vegetables alone may not eliminate the parasite, as it is highly persistent in the environment. The FDA warns that cyclospora is not killed by commonly used disinfectants, and heat is the only definitive way to kill the parasite. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis typically begin two to 14 days after exposure and may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, nausea, low-grade fever, and vomiting. Treatment with antibiotics is recommended, with trimethoprim sulfamethoxazol (Bactrim or Septra) being the most effective. However, individuals with compromised immune systems may require prolonged treatment. It is crucial to seek medical attention and testing if gastrointestinal symptoms persist, as early diagnosis and treatment are essential to managing the infection.
